Walks to Remember, Elliot Lake ON
There's a quaint town in Northern Ontario known for two things: Uranium mining, and yes, of course the mall collapse in 2012. After looking back at all the crazy things that have happened to this small town over the years, it's amazing that it's still around, and not just a ghost town left in the dust by wealthy mining corporations. The question always lingers in my mind "How did they survive this long?" There isn't a definitive answer to this question however, when and if you ever have chance to visit Elliot Lake, you'll soon realize what has kept these people calling Elliot Lake their home for so many generations.
The beauty of a city isn't necessarily the city itself, or the people in it, it is the Algoma district in which it resides in. Lakes surrounding land, connected through vast networks of streams and rivers are what make this place so special. It is a hikers paradise, a fisherman's paradise, and even a hunter's paradise. Old logging roads lead to beautiful waterfalls, and decommissioned mine sites connect to one another for miles and miles making it great for hiking and biking. Most of the people who really cherish Elliot Lake's best kept secrets don't like to necessarily share their wisdom on where to find and access these places, mostly to protect them and keep them a secret for themselves. It doesn't make them impossible to find though, if you drive down highway 108 there are trails breaking off into the bush all over the place, and they all lead to something beautiful, and if it wasn't what you were looking for, then I'm sure the adventure alone was worth the trip.
One of the most remarkable of places to visit is what the locals call "the Boland Falls", which is actually called Ceiling Falls. This is definitely one of the most beautiful waterfalls located in the Elliot Lake region, and it isn't as difficult to get to as you may think.
